Eureka Springs "Low Priority" Marijuana Petition To Appear on Ballot
Members from NORML UofA have been circulating a petition in the City of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, to make misdemeanor amounts of marijuana (1oz) the city's 'lowest law enforcement priority". NORML needed to 144 signatures to make the ballot, & were verified on Sept 15 by the City Clerk of Eureka Springs. The petition was then submitted to the Carroll County Election Commission, which verified that the initiative would appear on the ballot for the general election on November 7. This marks the first marijuana initiative to appear on the ballot in Arkansas state history.

2006 Mid-Term Election Results Offer Mixed Bag For Marijuana Law Reform

    November 8, 2006 - Washington, DC, USA
Washington, DC: The 2006 mid-term elections offered mixed results for marijuana law reformers, with voters rejecting three statewide liberalization efforts, but approving numerous local measures to 'deprioritize' pot law enforcement.

Death raises concern at police tactics
The recent killing of an unarmed Virginia doctor has raised concerns about what some say is an explosion in the use of military-style police Swat teams in the United States.

Armed with assault rifles, stun grenades - even armoured personnel carriers - units once used only in highly volatile situations are increasingly being deployed on more routine police missions.

  • Cincinnati Toughens Pot Laws!
Starting today, getting caught with a little pot could mean a little jail time - for at least the next year. The ordinance would increase the penalty for possessing less than 100 grams of marijuana - even a single joint - from a written citation and a $100 fine to arrest and a possible 30 days in jail.

  • Supreme Court Rules Unnanimously in UDV Case. American adherents of a Brazilian religious sect have won their battle to use hallucinogenic tea in their worship services.

In a unanimous ruling with major implications for minority religious groups in America, the US Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld the right of religious organizations to claim exemption from certain laws that undercut their ability to practice their faith.
At issue was a clash between US drug laws - which ban the hallucinogenic substance in the sect's sacred tea - and a 1993 religious freedom law that requires the government to grant religious exemptions when possible.
Although the central issue in the case was the religious use of a banned drug, Tuesday's ruling has broader significance. It paves the way for others to win exemptions from generally applicable laws that impede their ability to worship.

Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2005
    1. Contact their Member of Congress and urge them to co-sponsor the legislation.
If you do not know who your Member of Congress is, please go to the U.S. House of Representatives web site and type in your zip code at the top left of the page. Your message whether by phone, email (through their web site) or in person should be brief and to the point:

    * They should co-sponsor H.R. 3037, the Industrial Hemp Farming Act.
    * Allowing industrial hemp cultivation in the United States is good for agriculture, industry and commerce.
    * Over 30 industrial democracies allow, if not promote, the cultivation of industrial hemp.
    * Six states (Hawaii, Kentucky, Maine, Montana, North Dakota and West Virginia) have removed barriers to its production or research. All would, if Congress would act.
    * Industrial hemp is a close to marijuana as poppy seeds are to opium.

George McMahon walked into MU's Arts and Sciences building Saturday and dumped a can of "marijuana cigarettes" on the floor just to make a point.

He is one of many speakers who came to MU for the 2006 Midwest Drug Policy Conference, a three-day event sponsored by the National Organization for Reform of Marijuana Laws and Students for Sensible Drug Policy.

The conference features student activism workshops, books, merchandise and guest speakers from Columbia and around the country.
